Tyquan Thornton's Resilience Shines After Shocking Ankle Injury
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton took to social media after suffering a gnarly ankle injury against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, October 4. “Love this team! 4-0 baby! I’ll be back stronger & better #ChiefsKingdom,” Thornton, 26, shared via X hours after the game, a 30-27 victory for Kansas City. Thornton shared a separate message via Instagram, writing, “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step! .” The wide receiver’s Instagram post received a ton of love from his Chiefs teammates, including tight end Travis Kelce.
“All we make is big plays!!!! ,” Kelce, 37, commented. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes added, “My dawg! .” Thornton suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of the game on Sunday after securing a 55-yard completion from Mahomes. After being tackled by Raiders safety Treydan Stukes, Thornton’s left ankle bent at a noticeably unpleasant angle. He was carted off the field and was later seen exiting Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on crutches. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Thornton suffered a dislocated left ankle that was later put back into place by team doctors. He traveled back to Kansas City with the team and will have a full evaluation on Monday, October 5. For now, he’s listed out “indefinitely.” Thornton’s injury came amid a banner night for the wide receiver, shortly after he secured two touchdowns and amassed 111 receiving yards, leading the team. "It sucks that he hurt his ankle on that play, but it was a big play for us," Mahomes, 31, told reporters after the game. "It helped us go get the win. It's tough because those guys put in so much work. I was in that spot last year. One play can change your season. You hope for the best, but at the same time you want to show him support.” The quarterback continued, “I know how it is when you're in that position, and it's like the world is closing in on you. He's one of the best teammates I've ever had."
Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL and LCL in his left leg in December 2025. He returned to the field for Chiefs’ 2026 season opener last month. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Thornton’s injury “doesn’t look good.” "His attitude is unbelievable,” Reid, 68, told reporters. “He's great for the team and kind of a leader of that [receivers] group. For that to happen, especially with the year he's having, he's had a phenomenal year to this point, it's a tough one to see for all of the guys." The Chiefs are entering their bye week, and return to action at home against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, October 18.
